Ireland GLP-1 price and access guide

What weight-loss medication actually costs in Ireland

Two questions decide what you pay here, and only one of them is the sticker price. The other is whether the HSE reimburses the medicine at all, because that changes the number from a few euro to a few hundred.

Quick answer: the Irish pharmacies that publish prices were charging €235 to €355 a month for Wegovy and €265 to €585 for Mounjaro, depending on dose. Neither is reimbursed for weight management.

The bit that catches people out

The Drugs Payment Scheme caps what a household pays for medicines at €80 a month, and it is not means tested.[7] That is a genuinely good scheme, and it is the first thing people reach for when they hear the price of a GLP-1.

It does not apply here. The cap covers medicines the HSE reimburses. Mounjaro and Wegovy for weight management are not reimbursed as of 25 July 2026, so a private weight-loss prescription sits outside the scheme completely. Both of the Irish pharmacies below say exactly that on their own pages.[9][11]

There is a second trap worth naming. The same molecule can be reimbursed for one condition and not another. Tirzepatide has two separate live applications with the HSE, one for type 2 diabetes and one for weight management, filed five months apart and assessed independently.[1] A headline saying a GLP-1 is funded in Ireland is usually about diabetes.

Where each medicine stands with the HSE

This is the part almost nobody publishes, because it lives in HSE reimbursement records and NCPE assessment pages rather than in a press release. Dates are as recorded in those documents. What each medicine is licensed for across the EU, Ireland included, is set out in its European public assessment report.[17][16]

Saxenda (liraglutide)

Weight managementReimbursed, under a managed access protocol

The only weight-management medicine funded on the Community Drug Schemes. Available since 1 January 2023 under a Medicines Management Programme managed access protocol for adults with a BMI of 35 kg/m² or more, prediabetes and high cardiovascular risk. The prescriber applies per patient. Phase 1 gives 24 weeks; phase 2 continues only if the person has lost at least 5% of body weight after 12 weeks on the full 3.0 mg daily dose, and support runs to two years in total. By February 2026 more than 4,600 people were on it.[5][6]

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Eli Lilly applied on 24 June 2024. The NCPE finished its full health technology assessment on 3 December 2025 and recommended that tirzepatide be considered for reimbursement if cost-effectiveness can be improved relative to existing treatments. As of the HSE's February 2026 answer to a parliamentary question, the HSE's Corporate Pharmaceutical Unit had met Lilly and was awaiting a proposal. No decision date has been published.[2][1]

Wegovy (semaglutide)

Novo Nordisk applied on 19 March 2025, and the HSE gave the file reference HSE100033. The rapid review finished on 14 May 2025 and recommended a full assessment, which the HSE commissioned on 29 May 2025. Novo's full submission arrived on 23 February 2026, the NCPE sent a preliminary review back on 27 May 2026 and restarted its assessment on 26 June 2026. The NCPE status is still 'awaiting response from applicant'.[4][1][8]

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Type 2 diabetesAssessed separately from weight management

A completely separate application, made on 24 January 2024. The NCPE completed that assessment on 9 February 2026 with the same conditional wording: consider for reimbursement if cost-effectiveness can be improved. Both the diabetes and the weight-management applications were still with the HSE in February 2026. Being funded for diabetes would not make the same medicine funded for weight management.[3][1]

Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg)

The European Commission approved the tablet on 15 July 2026, after the EMA's committee recommended it on 22 May 2026. That authorisation covers Ireland. It does not put the tablet in Irish pharmacies, and it says nothing about who pays: the EMA notes that price and reimbursement are decided by each member state. Novo Nordisk has said only that it plans to launch in more countries in the second half of 2026.[15][14]

What Irish pharmacies publish

Most Irish pharmacies will not put a figure on a page, so this is not a market survey. It is two pharmacies that publish a complete dose-by-dose list, transcribed exactly as they wrote it on 25 July 2026. A valid prescription is required in every case, and the prescribing consultation is a separate cost.

Two things stand out when you line them up. Mounjaro is priced in tiers rather than per dose: 7.5 mg and 10 mg cost the same at both pharmacies, and so do 12.5 mg and 15 mg. The jumps land in the same places too. Going from 5 mg to 7.5 mg adds €115 at both. Going from 10 mg to 12.5 mg adds €120 at Healthwave and €115 at Inish. That matters more than the headline range, because it means one rung on the titration ladder can change what you pay far more than the rung before it did.

Wegovy is flatter. Both pharmacies hold one price across 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg, then raise it for the last two steps.

For context on where this started, Wegovy went on sale in Ireland in March 2025 at around €220 a month according to reporting at the time.[13] We have not verified that figure against a pharmacy list from 2025, so treat it as a marker rather than a baseline.

The pill: approved across the EU, no Irish price

On 15 July 2026 the European Commission approved oral semaglutide 25 mg for weight management, the first GLP-1 tablet licensed for that use in the EU.[15] The EMA committee had recommended it on 22 May 2026.[14] Because EU authorisations are centralised, that decision covers Ireland the moment it is made. the HPRA does not need to run a separate approval.

What it does not do is put tablets on a shelf in Cork, or say who pays for them. The EMA is explicit that price and reimbursement are settled country by country.[14] Novo Nordisk has said it plans more country launches in the second half of 2026 and has not named Ireland.[15]

So there is no Irish price for the pill on this page, because there is no Irish price for the pill. We will add one when a pharmacy publishes one. What the trial actually showed, and the routine the tablet demands.

What we could not verify

Everything above is sourced. This is the rest, kept visible on purpose. A gap you can see is more useful than a number someone made up.

A full price comparison across every Irish pharmacy
We transcribed two Irish pharmacies that publish a full dose-by-dose list. Most Irish pharmacies do not publish prices at all, and several tell you to ring for a quote. There is no Irish equivalent of a national price list, so treat the two lists below as samples rather than a market.
What the prescribing consultation costs
A prescription has to come from a prescriber before any pharmacy can dispense, and that assessment is usually charged separately from the medicine. We could not verify a consistent figure across Irish online prescribers, so we have not published one. Ask what the consultation costs before you start.
When the HSE will decide on Mounjaro or Wegovy for weight management
No date exists publicly. In February 2026 the HSE told the Dáil that both applications remained under consideration and that it could not comment on possible outcomes. The NCPE assessment pages are the place to watch.
When the Wegovy pill reaches Irish pharmacies, and at what price
EU approval landed on 15 July 2026 and Novo Nordisk has said it plans more country launches in the second half of 2026. No Irish launch date and no Irish price has been published. We will not print a number until one exists.
Whether private health insurance covers any of this
We could not verify a current Irish insurer position we would be willing to publish. Check your own policy documents rather than a summary.
